The Head-Up Display (HUD) has evolved far beyond a simple window showing basic information like speed and navigation. Today, it serves as a crucial interactive interface connecting the driver with vehicle status and the surrounding road environment.
However, as HUDs carry increasingly more information, new challenges have emerged. Issues such as cluttered information hierarchies, a lack of focus on key details, and poor readability in complex environments have hindered drivers from quickly grasping crucial data. Ensuring users can “see clearly, understand easily, and use effectively” under demanding driving scenarios has become a shared focus across the global smart automotive industry.
Setting the Global Standard
To address these challenges, Changan Automobile spent three years and submitted a total of seven proposals to drive the creation of the ITU-T F.749.20 international standard. Recently and officially published by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), this new standard provides a definitive international benchmark for the design and application of HUDs in smart vehicles worldwide.




Human-Centric Engineering and Testing
During the standard’s development, Changan Automobile’s Human Factors Engineering Laboratory prioritized real user driving experiences. Utilizing advanced research equipment such as eye-tracking, EEG (electroencephalography), and EDA (electrodermal activity) sensors, the team simulated typical driving scenarios—including high-speed cruising, navigating urban roads, and entering or exiting tunnels—to rigorously test and verify their HUD solutions.
By transforming authentic user feedback into quantifiable and actionable design requirements, Changan pushed HUD technology past a mere focus on visual flair. The result is a human-centric interface that perfectly balances safety, efficiency, and driving comfort.
Real-World Application
Currently, these cutting-edge research achievements have been integrated into Changan’s core lineup, including the Changan Qiyuan A07, Циюань A06, Deepal S05, and Mazda EZ-60.
