On August 19, on the eve of the 2026 Chengdu Auto Show, spy photographers captured real-car images of SAIC-Volkswagen’s all-new mid-to-large SUV—the Volkswagen ID.ERA 8X—near the exhibition halls. The new vehicle is scheduled to make its official public debut at the 2026 Chengdu Auto Show opening on August 21.

Since the photographed vehicle was clad in camouflage, official rendering images provide a clearer view of its final production details. The ID.ERA 8X is equipped with a full-width “Universal Light Wing” LED light strip paired with signature L-shaped daytime running lights, significantly elevating the front fascia’s visual recognition. Notably, the vehicle will also offer an exclusive “Starlight Blue” exterior color option.

Tech-Forward Cabin & 5-Seat Layout

The new model continues the high-tech interior design language established by the Volkswagen ID.ERA 9X. The cabin features a two-spoke multi-function steering wheel, an instrument “Magic Screen,” “Smart Surface” door panel interactive screens, and a 15.6-inch 2.5K dual-screen central control layout, creating a sophisticated digital ambiance. Furthermore, adopting a 5-seat layout ensures generous passenger room alongside exceptional rear trunk cargo space.

Vehicle Dimensions, Powertrain, and Battery Specs

In terms of dimensions, the mid-to-large SUV measures 5,020 mm in length, 1,997 mm in width, and 1,750 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,970 mm.

Under the hood, the ID.ERA 8X features a 1.5T extended-range powertrain (EREV). The 1.5T range extender delivers a maximum output of 105 kW, while the electric drive motor achieves a peak power of 220 kW.

Buyers can select between two battery pack capacities:

• 51.1 kWh Battery Pack: Offers pure electric ranges of 260 km and 275 km under WLTC conditions. According to official data, CLTC pure electric range exceeds 340 km, with a total combined cruising range surpassing 1,400 km.
• 65.2 kWh Battery Pack: Delivers WLTC pure electric ranges of 330 km and 345 km. On the CLTC cycle, pure electric range exceeds 400 км, pushing the total combined range past 1 500 км.

“Xingyun” Digital Chassis & Magic Carpet Suspension

For ride dynamics, the ID.ERA 8X is equipped with the “Xingyun” (Cloud-Riding) Digital Chassis, relying on the VMC (Vehicle Motion Control) intelligent hub to execute millisecond-level dynamic adjustments. On the hardware side, it features dual-chamber air suspension paired with an intelligent road-preview “Magic Carpet” system, which proactively detects upcoming road contours and actively adjusts damping for maximum comfort.
